Highlights from 2025 of the Working Group in the Coffee Sector

The German Retailers Working Group on Living Income in the Coffee Sector brings together German retailers to strengthen the livelihoods of smallholder coffee farmers in Honduras and Peru. Together with partners and producer organizations in the project countries, the Working Group combines responsible purchasing practices with measures to strengthen resilient production and producer organizations, while fostering collaboration across the coffee supply chain. Looking back at 2025, the following milestones highlight the progress made throughout the year.

GIZ and partners host Workshop on Producers’ Perspectives at World of Coffee 2026

On Friday, 26 June, the workshop “The Producers’ Perspective” took place as part of World of Coffee 2026 in Brussels. Hosted by the Global Coffee Platform (GCP), IDH, Solidaridad, GIZ and the Sustainable Food Lab (SFL), the workshop created a space for representatives from the coffee sectors from Brazil, Honduras, Liberia and Mozambique to reflect on purchasing practices.

Empowering Women and Youth Leaders for Green and Inclusive Business

With the aim of strengthening youth leadership and promoting the inclusion of women in rural areas, a workshop on green and inclusive entrepreneurship for young and female leaders was held in May in Pichanaki, Peru. Participants analysed current regional economic dynamics, learned valuable design thinking and leadership skills, and practiced the development of proposals and the presentation of pitches.

Working towards Responsible Purchasing Practices to promote Living Income in the Coffee Sector

Key actors in the Peruvian coffee sector came together in Lima this May to develop a common understanding on responsible purchasing practices, identify different perspectives and challenges as well as map impacts of purchasing and sourcing practices through the supply chain. The active collaboration of key actors and perspectives shared will inform the development of sector guidelines for responsible purchasing practices.

How coffee organisations cope with the effects of climate change

While coffee production in Peru faces growing challenges, a distinct set of responses is emerging in the Selva Central to address these problems. Producers are adopting new practices to improve productivity, resilience and farm management. Through training, demonstration plots and knowledge sharing between farmers, tangible results have already begun transforming coffee production to be more sustainable.

Promoting generational transition in the Honduran coffee industry through CAFEXPO

The German Retailers’ Working Group’s project “Towards Decent Incomes in the Coffee Sector” provided support to the Honduran Coffee Institute (IHCAFE) at CAFEXPO 2026, where efforts were made to boost the competitiveness of Honduran coffee based on the pillars of generational renewal, climate resilience and technological innovation. During the event, a panel was held with young coffee producers on generational succession, highlighting the importance of involving new generations in the future of coffee in Honduras.

Strategic Dialogue Between Key Actors in the Honduran Coffee Sector

GIZ coordinated a Stakeholder Workshop in Honduras on March 6th, 2026, as part of the German Retailers’ Working Group on Living Income in the Coffee Sector. The workshop brought together various stakeholders and actors relevant to the coffee sector, fostering exchange and dialogue on living income in the coffee sector.

Field Visit of APROCOMSA: Dialogue and Learning on Living Incomes in Coffee

Representatives of the German Retailers Working Group, the German Embassy, and GIZ visited the farm La Colmena together with producers and the APROCOMSA team. During the visit, they learned about production practices, coffee quality, and experiences, offering insights into the WG’s objective of living incomes for coffee-growing families.

Baseline Study on Household Incomes in the Coffee Sector in Peru & Honduras

Examining household income data and needs assessments from the 2024/2025 coffee year, the Baseline Assessment published by German Retailers’ Working Group offers important contextual insights into the coffee sectors of Peru and Honduras, providing the Working Group with an evidence-based foundation for ongoing and new project activities.

'Beyond Price: Strategies for a Sustainable Income for Producers' - Conference held in Peru

The conference 'Beyond Price: Strategies for a Sustainable Income for Producers' was held on 27 November in Lima, organised by the German Development Cooperation, the NGO Rikolto and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This event marked the launch of the Coffee Symposium activities within the framework of Expocafé 2025 in Peru, the country’s largest national trade fair for the sector.
