INCAS Global+ supports more than 5000 coffee farmers in becoming more sustainable

Supporting the transition towards more sustainable global agricultural supply chains, the AgriChains project in Colombia, implemented under the name of INCAS Global+ (Innovation in Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains), has achieved the increase of sustainable practices in more than five thousand coffee farms in Colombia.

Sustainable actions include:

  • establishment of agroforestry systems associated with coffee
  • implementation of coffee washing systems with low water consumption
  • monitoring of biodiversity in coffee systems
  • empowerment of women coffee growers and youth inclusion

Thanks to these measures the farms contribute to a more sustainable coffee supply chain.

Since 2020, more than three thousand tons of parchment coffee certified under the Rainforest Alliance Voluntary Sustainability Standard (VSS) have been internationally commercialized, guaranteeing that the generated higher profit goes directly to the producers. These practices offer opportunities to strengthen global sustainable trade, with buyers such as SKN/Nespresso and Carcafe/Lavazza joining in the purchase of commodities that respect European due diligence standards.

The INCAS Global+ project is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project also supports the sustainable transformation of cocoa, natural rubber, palm oil and banana supply chains.

The results of the project in Colombia are also reported in the newsletter of the AgriChains project.
