INA and SAFE Drive Traceability and Alignment at Jakarta Roundtables for Sustainable Palm Oil and Coconuts

Mid of November, INA and the EU and BMZ co-funded project SAFE (Sustainable Agriculture for Forest Ecosystems) participated in the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil and the Roundtable on Sustainable Coconut in Jakarta. The focus was on aligning efforts in traceability and smallholder inclusion in deforestation-free supply chains. With traceability as a key need for compliance with the new EU Regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR) events emphasized the industry's keen interest in interoperability and INA’s Digital Integration of Agricultural Supply Chains Alliance (DIASCA) as well as the open-source traceability tool INATrace.

The events highlighted traceability as essential for sustainability and compliance in the sector: Enabling stakeholders to track product origins from field to shelf, address environmental concerns, especially on deforestation and nature conservation as well as to meet regulatory requirements. In the field of sustainable palm oil, jurisdictional approaches and their potential for smallholder inclusion in supply chains as well as new and adapted policies, strategies and reporting structures were presented and shared. Interoperability discussions emphasized the importance of standardized systems for seamless information exchange. There was a unanimous emphasis on the imperative need for alignment among all stakeholders involved.

Smallholder inclusion emerged as a critical focus, reflecting a shared commitment to empower smallholders with support on and tools for traceability. The events served as a catalyst for ongoing collaborations, shaping a more sustainable and inclusive future for palm oil and coconut sectors.

SAFE in collaboration with DIASCA will together work with the Forest Data Partnership and Linux Foundation on interoperable digital public Infrastructure to enable EUDR compliance (geolocation, traceability, forest monitoring) at scale for smallholder producers and their organisations.
