FIT for FAIR launches in Thailand: For fair and deforestation-free value chains

FIT for FAIR has officially launched its activities in Thailand with an inaugural workshop in Bangkok. The program is a flagship of the Team Europe initiative for deforestation-free supply chains and is being implemented locally by the Thailand Environment Institute (TEI). A total of ninety-four committed representatives from government, the private sector, academia, the financial sector, and civil society took part in the event.

FIT for FAIR supports partner countries in creating enabling policy and legal frameworks that empower actors along supply chains to successfully contribute to compliance with European due diligence laws, such as the EU Regulation on deforestation-free supply chains (EUDR) and the Corporate Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

At thematic tables on rubber, palm oil, and timber, as well as on traceability, human rights, and environmental protection/deforestation, participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the requirements and practical implementation of due diligence obligations. The discussions highlighted the strong commitment and high motivation of Thai stakeholders to further promote fair and deforestation-free supply chains. At the same time, they revealed that a deeper understanding of the practical implications of these obligations is still needed.

As next steps, the Thailand Environment Institute will, together with relevant stakeholders, coordinate the way forward and establish a regularly convening working group. In the coming months, a status quo and gap analysis will be carried out, followed by the formulation of policy recommendations.
