Project description

More than 95% of Indonesia's cocoa is produced by smallholders with 2 hectares or less. Approximately 32% (450,000) of these producers are women, who face discrimination and inequality, and their significant contributions to the global cocoa economy are frequently unrecognized.

GrowHer: Kakao focusses on improving the rights of women and girls, strengthening their representation in the cocoa supply chain, and providing resources and training for 4,000 women smallholders and entrepreneurs.

The project will enhance gender equity in the cocoa value chain by addressing social and environmental issues. The initiative will invest in culturally sensitive training and resources, leveraging local governance, and challenging gender-based power structures. It seeks to empower women farmers and supply chain partners to train others, improve government policies to support women's leadership, address harmful social norms for equitable decision-making, and increase women's and girls' participation in advocacy and village development planning. Further, GrowHer: Kakao will actively work to inform gender-transformative policymaking in Indonesia and ASEAN, incorporating climate-smart practices to highlight women's vital role in climate change adaptation in Southeast Asia.
