SASI Lunchbreak on supply chain due diligence act part 6
Combating child labour through digitalization
Dear friends of the Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains Initiative (SASI),
We hereby invite you to the 6th SASI Lunchbreak on June 6th, 2025, from 12:00 to 13:00 CET.
In this SASI Lunchbreak, we will focus on the topic of Combating child labour through digitalization.
Around 160 million children worldwide are affected by child labour. Around 70 percent of these children work in agriculture - often under dangerous conditions or without access to education. The causes range from insufficient income of their parents and rural poverty to discrimination, marginalisation and a lack of infrastructure.
The risk of child labour exists in many global agricultural supply chains and European companies therefore also bear responsibility as part of their human rights due diligence obligations. However, the causes are complex and prevention and remedial measures are correspondingly challenging.
How can child labour be made visible along global supply chains - and where can preventive measures be targeted?
In the upcoming SASI Lunchbreak, experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will discuss how digital approaches can contribute to combating child labour.
FAO has worked on child labour prevention in agriculture for almost 20 years. Through policy support, capacity building, livelihood interventions and partnerships, FAO supports governments, agrifood system actors and rural communities in addressing the root causes of child labour.
The DIGICHILD Initiative is a key part of this effort, leveraging georeferenced data to upscale child labour risk assessment, mapping and remediation. Through GIS-based data, DIGICHILD aims to inform cost-effective, tailored and timely child labour prevention actions, as well as supporting traceability, transparency and due diligence compliance along agrifood value chains

In our series of events, we will show that implementing due diligence is feasible for everyone. With our expertise, we want to actively support you in the implementation. On the one hand, we will present various practice-oriented tools and guidelines with a focus on the agricultural and food sector. On the other hand, we keep an eye on ongoing EU legislative processes and international discussions for you. It is also indispensable to take the perspective of the people and companies in the partner countries. We want to include them through our cooperation on the ground. The SASI Lunchbreak is a regular format offered online as a digital event on the first Friday of each month.
