DIASCA Dialogue – Forest Agreement Layer (FAL)

Dear Friends of DIASCA,

We are happy to announce the DIASCA Dialogues, the new format to exchange and co-create Digital Public Infrastructure.

In our first session, we will focus on forest monitoring presented by Thünen Institute of Forestry.

We cordially invite you to join us on Monday, April 27th  3:00 pm – 4:00 pm CEST.

Forest Agreement Layer (FAL) – an open-source tool to support decision-making on the location of forests globally

The Forest Agreement Layer (FAL) is an open-source tool developed in Google Earth Engine that combines multiple global forest datasets into a single, easy-to-interpret map. Instead of relying on just one map source, it highlights where different datasets have a higher probability to "agree" or "disagree" on what is classified as a forest or tree covered area. This approach helps address a common challenge: forest map data can vary significantly depending on the source, making it difficult for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to draw robust conclusions. By making these differences visible, FAL supports transparent decision-making, particularly in the context of the EU Deforestation Regulation, where reliable forest reference information is essential.  Beyond its technical foundation, the tool is designed to be practical and adaptable. It can help identify areas where further verification is needed, support monitoring efforts, and improve confidence in reporting and planning. Because it is open and scalable, the approach can also be applied to different regions or environmental topics where combining multiple geospatial data sources can lead to more robust insights.

This makes the webinar relevant not only for technical experts, but also for anyone interested in how better geospatial data can support transparent and informed environmental decision-making.
