Workshop on Living Income in Latin America: Towards a Prosperous Future
Last year, the Living Income Community of Practice brought together over 80 participants for its annual in-person workshop and learning journeys in Colombia, from November 5 to 8, 2024. The event took place from November 5 to 8, 2024, providing a space for cooperative leaders, NGOs, government representatives, brands, trading houses, and academics to network and learn from each other.
The Living Income Community of Practice (LICOP), with the support from the UK International Development from the UK government, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and IDH, hosted an in-person workshop in Columbia that allowed participants to deepen engagement, foster collaboration and share knowledge with various stakeholders across Latin America. The workshop was supplemented by two learning journeys on coffee and cocoa, offering participants the unique opportunity to reflect and learn while directly connecting with producer communities. Key points discussed were:
- Responsible Purchasing Practices play a transforming role for farmers, they must evolve to become a strategic partnership, where shared responsibilities and risk mitigation are prioritized to build a resilient supply chain.
- Measurement tools and methodologies for benchmarking and measurement are necessary to close the income gap. They are vital for identifying income disparities and creating targeted strategies for improvement.
- Collaboration among industry stakeholders is essential. Cross-sector partnerships and non-competitive spaces can ensure that insights and lessons learnt are translated into action.
- Inclusion practices that prioritise marginalised groups are key. Greater diversity in voices ensures that there is more comprehensive understanding of the situation in the group and ensures more effective solutions.
- Long-term commitments and trust- and relationship-building among all stakeholders will foster mutual growth, transparency, and a shared vision to increase progress on living income.
