Baseline Study on Household Incomes in the Coffee Sector in Peru & Honduras

Examining household income data and needs assessments from the 2024/2025 coffee year, the Baseline Assessment published by German Retailers’ Working Group offers important contextual insights into the coffee sectors of Peru and Honduras, providing the Working Group with an evidence-based foundation for ongoing and new project activities.

We are pleased to present the results of the Baseline Assessment of the German Retailers’ Working Group on Living Incomes in the Coffee Sector. This report represents an important milestone in the project and provides an evidence-based foundation for the development of our implementation strategy.

The data in this report refers to the coffee year 2024/2025, a period characterised by exceptionally high and still rising coffee prices. The results also show similarly high producer incomes among those assessed. However, when comparing these recent trends with data from previous years, when coffee prices were lower, there is a clear indication of a strong correlation between producer incomes and market price fluctuations. This context underscores the importance of fair and stable prices for coffee producers’ livelihoods. Additional data was gathered through expert interviews and focus group discussions, particularly to establish country context and conduct needs assessments.

Despite certain methodological limitations, the baseline assessment nonetheless establishes a critical reference point. The project aims to stabilise and, where possible, improve producers’ income situations, with future endline assessments serving to measure progress.
