Living wages in the banana sector

The working group has decided to develop concepts for establishing living wages, initially for the raw material banana. ALDI Nord and ALDI Süd, dm-drogerie markt, Kaufland and Rewe Group are working closely together on this.  They are convinced that urgent action is required in order to bring about sustainable change in banana production and offer people in the production regions a secure livelihood. Living wages play a crucial role in this. Members are relying on pre-competitive cooperation rather than individual solutions. This will allow broad-based, systemic changes to be achieved and the situation to be improved for producers.

This common, holistic approach includes the close involvement and support of suppliers and producers in the overall project. In addition, the aim is not only to focus on retailers’ procurement practices but also to strengthen workers’ representation and pilot actions to not only increase the wage level but also improve employees’ overall working and living conditions.

The working group also regularly shares its knowledge and experience of implementing living wages with important partners. These include the Banana Link, Fairtrade, IDH, Rainforest Alliance and World Banana Forum organisations as well as trade unions in the partner countries.
