Our Scaling Approach

Responsible and fair scaling needs more than one building block

Since 2020, the Fund for the Promotion of Innovation in Agriculture (i4Ag) has enabled a diverse range of agricultural innovation projects globally. Many innovations show great potential in the pilot phase, yet turning that potential into sustainable, large-scale impact is one of the biggest challenges to face – ranging from prioritising potential scaling contexts and approaches, identifying enabling conditions and bottlenecks to developing a viable strategy. To facilitate the adoption of impactful innovations and foster sustainable environmental and social impact, the scaling approach of i4Ag emphasises the creation of a supportive scaling ecosystem that includes the provision of scaling methodologies, capacity development, resource mobilisation, and professional networks.

Preparing for Innovation Scaling

Fit4Scale is an online capacity development programme that builds the capabilities needed to take proven innovations to scale. Over the course of the programme, participants will deepen their understanding of key scaling concepts, strengthen their skills through practical case work, and apply what they learn directly to their own context or innovation. Fit4Scale provides the tools, knowledge, and network to prepare for successful innovation scaling.

Partnering with FAO’s Agrifood Systems Technologies and Innovations Outlook Knowledge Base (ATIO KB) we contribute to the further development of the AI-enabled innovation platform that connects innovation portfolios worldwide. ATIO KB provides access to information on validated agri-food innovations for a variety of stakeholders, ranging from researchers to policymakers. By capturing grassroots innovations developed by local farming communities, the platform links the informal with the formal innovation system for enhanced global sharing.

ATIO KB is co-funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

As a founding member of the Scaling Coalition, we collaborate with CGIAR, FAO, the World Bank Group and Gates Foundation to address global scaling challenges collectively and ensure innovations reach those in need more efficiently. Operating with a lean governance structure, the Scaling Coalition relies on active in-kind contributions of its members.

Open calls for joining existing groups or setting up new groups are announced at the Coalition’s website.
